FORT WORTH, TX (02.15.17) - The UT Dallas baseball team improved to 3-1 on the young season after a 4-3 non-conference road victory Texas Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon.
The Comets rallied from a 3-0 deficit to take the one-run lead in the 5th, then got shutdown relief pitching from five hurlers to finish off the win.
The Comets return to action over the weekend with a three-game series at No. 10-ranked Texas Lutheran, beginning Friday night at 7 pm in Seguin.
Trailing 3-0 in the top the 5th, the Comets scored four runs on four hits to take the lead, with the big blow coming on a two-hit, 2-RBI single up the middle by junior transfer
Connor Scruggs.
With the Comets giving nine different pitchers a one-inning turn, the combination of
Cole Hanson,
Brandon Koncaba,
Drew Thompson,
Tyler Keegan and
Tristin DerMargosian shut the door on the TWU offense, shutting the Rams out with just three hits in the final five frames.
Zach Bomer picked up the win as the pitcher of record, and DerMargosian got the save after pitching the ninth inning.
TWU struck early in the bottom of the 1st, putting together a leadoff triple and a two-run home run to go up 2-0. The Rams then added another run in the 4th with a two-out solo homerun.
But UTD got all the runs it would need in a four-run 5th. Freshman
Isaiah Swann and junior
Josh Covey started the inning beating out infield singles to third base. After a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to
Barry Casey,
Mitch Barati brought Swann home with the Comets' first run on a fielder's choice.
Nolan Smith then delivered the second run with a clean single through the left side to score Covey, setting the stage for Scruggs' two-run grounder up the middle.
Scruggs topped all Comet hitters with a 3-for-4 afternoon with two RBI while Covey was 2-for-5. Relievers
Junior Escobar and
Andrew Leilich also tossed scoreless frames for UTD early in the game. In total, the Comets outhit TWU, 10-6, while recorded seven strikeouts combined.
