ALPINE, TX (03.10.17) - The No. 15-ranked UT Dallas baseball team collected a season-high 22 hits while recording its third shutout of the season Friday night in a 15-0 win over Sul Ross State to kick off a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
The Comets (14-2, 3-1 ASC) topped double-digit runs for the ninth time in 16 games this season and have now won 12 of their last 13 games after Friday's lop-sided victory. The two teams will close the weekend set Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Kokernot Field.
Second baseman
Ryan Burciaga recorded his second five-hit game of the season Friday as he finished the contest 5-for-6 from the plate with six RBI and four runs scored. The sophomore from Katy finished with a career-best 10 total bases, registering his third home run of the season and a pair of doubles. On the mound, junior right-hander
Jamie Andriot (4-0) did not need much offense as he struck out seven Lobos while giving up just four hits in 6.0 innings of work.
UTD opened the scoring with a single run in the 1st on a
Garrett Uhl bases-loaded groundout, scoring Burciaga. After a scoreless 2nd, the Comets would plate 14 runs over the next five innings en route to the win.
Thomas Craig was the recipient of a fourth straight walk by Sul Ross starter Cody Remore (4-1) in the 3rd frame as the Comets doubled their lead to 2-0.
The Comets would extend their lead to 4-0 two batters into the 4th on a Burciaga two-run blast, sparking a five-run inning for UTD. Uhl and
Mitch Barati each picked up RBi in the frame before the Comets added a final run on a SRSU error. In the 5th, Burciaga got his third RBI of the game with a double to left, plating
Josh Covey, before scoring on a
Connor Scruggs single later in the inning.
Burciaga then triggered a four-run 6th with his second double of the game, scoring both Barati and
Isaiah Swann. The Comets would lead 13-0 after the 6th thanks to back-to-back RBI singles from
Barry Casey and Scruggs. UTD tallied its final runs of the night with RBI singles by Burciaga and Casey in the 7th.
Five Comets recorded multi-hit performances Friday night. Joining Burciaga were Casey (4-for-4), Covey (4-for-5), Scruggs (3-for-5) and Swann (2-for-4). Burciaga's five hits matches a UTD single-game record, now accomplished 17 times in program history.
