Baseball Splits With Sul Ross State, Takes Weekend Series

ALPINE, TX (03.11.17) - The No. 15-ranked UT Dallas baseball team earned its second straight series win to open American Southwest Conference play after splitting a pair of games Saturday afternoon at Sul Ross State. The Comets took Saturday's opener, 11-4, before falling in the series finale, 16-15, in 10 innings.

The Comets (15-3, 4-2 ASC) return to action Tuesday afternoon when they visit Concordia Texas in non-conference action. Game time is 1 p.m. in Austin.

GAME 1 - UTD 11, SRSU 4
After taking Friday's series opener against the Lobos, 15-0, the Comets pounded out 13 hits for an 11-4 victory in a seven-inning contest to open Saturday's doubleheader at Sul Ross State.

Down 2-0 after two innings, UTD plated four runs in the 3rd and added six runs over the final two frames to secure the series against the Lobos. Barry Casey finished the win 3-for-4 with three RBI while Josh Covey, Ryan Burciaga and Connor Scruggs were each 2-for-4. Junior right-hander Ruben Renteria (4-0) kept his slate clean as he scattered seven hits, giving up two earned runs with four strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.

The Comets evened the game in the top of the 3rd with a two-run single by Scruggs, scoring Isaiah Swann and Covey. UTD would later take a 4-2 lead in the frame with two runs on a Lobo error. The Comets extended their lead to 5-2 in the 5th on a Burciaga double, scoring Covey.

In the 6th, UTD picked up a pair of runs on a Casey double to left field and a third run on a Scruggs sacrifice fly. The Comets then added RBI hits by Zach Scataglia, Swann and Casey in the 7th.

GAME 2 - SRSU 16, UTD 15 (10 inn.)
The Comets used an 11-run 2nd inning to seemingly create a path to a series sweep over Sul Ross State, but five UTD pitchers would give up 26 hits as the Lobos rallied for a 16-15 victory in extra innings.

UTD opened the game with a lead-off homer by Covey, his third of the season, and added an RBI double by Scruggs in the 1st to snag a quick 2-0 lead. The Lobos, however, answered with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the game, 2-2.

The Comets would then send 16 batters to the plate in the 2nd, scoring 11 runs on 11 hits. UTD would score its first 10 runs in the inning without recording as the Cometrs opened the inning with 10 straight hits. Luke Richter opened the frame with a solo homer, his second of the year, and Casey added a two-run longball later in the inning, his team-leading five home run of the season.

But, the host Lobos answered with seven runs over their next three innings to draw within four runs, 13-9, after four innings. The Comets plated a run each in the 6th and 7th, however, SRSU did no more damage in its halves, clawing within a run, 15-14, heading to the 8th. The Lobos then tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with an unearned run off of the Comets' only error of the contest.

After a scoreless 9th, the Comets loaded the bases in the top of the 10th with just one out, but were not able to plate a go-ahead run. The Lobos then loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, also with one out, and ended the game with a single to right field by Chris York, handing the Comets their second walk-off loss of the season.

The Comets finished the game with a season-high 25 hits, three shy of the program record, with eight different batters recording multi-hit games. Scruggs and Richter each ended the game 4-for-6. Burciaga and Mitch Barati each tied the school record with seven at bats in a game.
