CLARKSVILLE, AR (03.04.17) - The No. 23-ranked UT Dallas baseball team opened American Southwest Conference play by taking a weekend series at Ozarks after splitting a doubleheader with the Eagles on Saturday.
The Comets (12-2, 2-1 ASC) opened the series at Ozarks Friday afternoon with an 8-3 win before blanking the Eagles, 12-0, in Saturday's opener. UTD's chances for a sweep of the Eagles ended after a walk-off home run in the Comets' 6-3 loss in the series finale.
UTD returns to action Tuesday afternoon with a 1 p.m. non-conference home game with Northland College. The Comets will then hit the road next weekend for three-game ASC series at Sul Ross State.
GAME 1 - UTD 12, UO 0
The Comets belted two home runs as part of a five-run 4th inning as UTD opened Saturday's twin bill with the Eagles with a 12-0 victory.
Ruben Renteria (3-0) earned another win as he scattered four hits in 5.0 innings of work with one strikeout in his first appearance since one-hitting Hendrix last Saturday.
UTD opened the scoring in the top of the 1st with lead-off walk followed by a stolen base by
Josh Covey. Covey would then come home on an Eagle error on a
Barry Casey ground ball. The Comets doubled their lead in the 2nd with an RBI groundout by
Thomas Craig, scoring
Mitch Barati, and then erupted for nine runs over the next two frames to pull away.
The Comets plated four runs in the 3rd on four hits and another UO error to take a 6-0 lead.
Connor Scruggs,
Garrett Uhl and
Isaiah Swann each collected RBIs on singles in the 3rd while Craig brought home another run with a bases-loaded walk. In the 5th, Casey blasted his team-leading fourth home run to account for the Comets' first three runs in the frame before
Luke Richter plated a pair on his first long ball of the season. UTD tacked on one final run in the 6th with a
Nolan Smith pinch-hit single, scoring Richter.
Scruggs was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and RBI while Covey was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of steals from the leadoff spot. Casey finished the game 1-for-4 with four RBI.
GAME 2 - UO 6, UTD 3
The Comets took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th only to give up five runs, including a three-run walk-off homer, in a 6-3 loss in the series finale.
UTD plated two runs in the 2nd inning to grab a quick 2-0 lead. The Comets started the scoring with an RBI single by Barati, scoring Uhl, and added a second run on an Eagle error. Leading 2-1 in the 6th, the Comets added another run thanks to an Ozarks error to secure a 3-1 advantage.
With the same score in the 9th, Ozarks scored five runs on four hits with a three-run blast by Patrick Clifford to end the game.
Jordan Murphy started the game for the Comets and lasted five innings, strikeout out five with one earned run allowed. Reliever
Cole Hanson tossed the final 3.2 innings with three strikeouts. Barati finished the game 2-for-3 while Covey was 2-for-4.
