RICHARDSON, TX (03.07.17) - Coming off just its second loss of the season, the No. 15-ranked UT Dallas baseball team bounced back Tuesday afternoon with a 10-4 home win over Northland College in non-conference play.
The Comets (13-2) used 13 hits and scored in six of eight innings en route to Tuesday's victory over the Lumberjacks (0-3). UTD returns to American Southwest Conference play with a three-game series at Sul Ross State, starting Friday at 7 p.m. in Alpine.
UTD plated four runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to five walks issued by Jack starter Anthony Corrado. The Comets opened the scoring with an RBI single by
Barry Casey, scoring lead-off hitter
Josh Covey, and later drew back-to-back bases-loaded walks by Grarett Uhl and
Michael Morton. UTD finished its four-run 1st with a sacrifice fly by
Isaiah Swann.
After giving back two runs in the top of the 2nd, the Comets picked up single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th innings to extend their lead to 8-2. In the 2nd,
Ryan Burciaga came home on a
Connor Scruggs ground out. Burciaga then gave UTD back a four-run cushion in the 3rd when he singled in Morton. In the 5th, Burciaga picked up his second RBI with a double down the left field line, scoring Covey from first base. Uhl then belted his second home run of the season in the 6th to give UTD its first six-run lead of the afternoon.
The Lumberjacks answered with a run each in the 7th and 8th before the Comets plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th frame. After a lead-off double by
Luke Richter, Swann picked up an RBI on a sacrifice bunt and Deacon completed the scoring with a double to right, scoring Morton.
UTD starter
Tyler Keegan did not factor in the decision, tossing just 2.0 innings with four strikeouts and two earned runs. Keegan opened the game by striking out NC in order in the 1st.
Jonathan May (1-0) was the first of four Comet relievers to take the mound, tossing 3.0 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
Morton finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Casey was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Covey and Burciaga were each 2-for-5 from the plate.
