GEORGETOWN, TX (04.17.17) - The No. 13-ranked UT Dallas baseball team rallied from a two-run deficit midway through the contest to earn a 6-3 win over Southwestern Monday night in the Comets' final non-conference game of the regular season.
The Comets (26-8) extended their winning streak to four games with Monday's victory and will look continue the trend this weekend with a three-game American Southwest Conference series at Mary Hardin-Baylor. The two teams will play a single game at 7 p.m. Friday before a 1 p.m. Saturday doubleheader in Belton.
Down 1-0 in the 5th, UTD evened the game with a sacrifice fly by
Connor Scruggs, scoring
Mathew Deacon. However, the host Pirates answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to snag a 3-1 advantage.
Josh Covey knotted the game, 3-3, in the top of the 6th with a bases-loaded single through the left side, scoring
Michael Morton and pinch-runner
Rodney Corbin. The Comets took their first lead of the night later in the inning when Dean scored from second base on a two-out dropped fly ball by the Southwestern centerfielder. UTD tacked on two insurance runs in the 8th, taking advantage of another Pirate error, followed by a two-out single by
Luke Richter.
Jonathan May (2-3) was awarded the victory as one of four relievers in support of starter
Michael Deacon's longest out of the season. Deacon tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit with three strikeouts, before giving way to
Drew Thompson. Thompson gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings of work. May took over with one out in the 5th and finished the frame with a ground out and a fly out.
Tyler Keegan added two scoreless frames, giving up just one hit, before
Tristin DerMargosian earned his team-leading third save of the season with two scoreless innings of his own.
Covey reached base five times in the contest, going 2-for-3 from the plate with three walks. Deacon was the only other Comet with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
