TYLER, TX (04.27.17) - The No. 12 UT Dallas softball team is heading to the winner's bracket final of the 2017 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament after a 5-2 come-from-behind victory over No. 10 East Texas Baptist Thursday afternoon at Suddenlink Field on the campus of Texas-Tyler.
The No. 3-seeded Comets (34-8) are now riding a school-record 14-game winning streak and will return to the field at 4 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday night's game between Texas-Tyler and Louisiana College. Second-seeded ETBU will play in an elimination game at 10 a.m. Friday against No. 4 seed Mary Hardin-Baylor.
The No. 10-ranked Tigers opened the scoring with an unearned run in the 2nd and tacked on a second run in the 5th to snag a 2-0 advantage. But, the Comets answered with two runs with two outs in the top of 6th to knot the game, 2-2, and then plated three runs on a pair of two-out hits in the top of the 7th to complete the comeback.
With runners on the corners in the 6th,
Samantha Halliburton got UTD on the score board with an RBI single to left, bringing home
Melissa Livermore. On the very next pitch,
Jessica Vlasek evened the contest with a bloop single to left-center, scoring
Hope Griffith.
In the 7th,
Hope Griffith knocked in the go-ahead run as she drilled a single to left to score
Ravin Wilson from second base.
Brittany Perkins then gave the Comets a three-run advantage by plating a pair of runs on a single to right just two pitches later.
ETBU opened the bottom of the 7th with three straight singles, but reliever
Sara Davison took over with the bases loaded and recorded the three-out save, her first of the season.
Allie Stephens (12-4) batted with ETBU hurler Jordan Anderson and ended up on the winning side, giving up one earned run on nine hits with two strikeouts. The Comets managed nine hits off of Anderson as well with Livermore and Perkins each finishing the game 2-for-4.
