Comets Battle No. 8 Hardin-Simmons to 1-1 Draw

ABILENE, TX (10.13.18) - In a clash of the two top teams in the American Southwest Conference, the UT Dallas women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against No. 8-ranked and 15-time defending conference champion Hardin-Simmons Saturday night.

The Comets (13-0-1, 7-0-1 ASC) struck first with a goal by Ashlyn Sims in the 35th minute as the freshman collected the mess after a UTD corner kick and found the net from a near-impossible angle from the left of the goal, shooting past Cowgirl keeper Caitlin Christiansen. Sims' tally, her second of the season, was the Comets' lone shot on goal in the opening half as HSU dominated possession over the opening 45 minutes.

UTD was just six minutes shy its first win over the Cowgirls since 2002, and its ASC-record-tying 11th consecutive shutout, when HSU's Kendell Groom drilled a shot from 30 yards out into the top left of the Comet goal in the 84th minute to even the contest. The goal was just the second allowed by the UTD defense this season.

The two teams combined for just one shot in the first overtime period, that coming for UTD's Bailee Davis, before the host Cowgirls (10-1-1, 7-0-1 ASC) had two scoring opportunities in the second extra frame, both saved by Comet keeper Monica Dallacasa.

The Comets finished the night with just six shots and only three shots on goal, both seasons lows, while HSU managed 16 shots, nine on frame. Dallacasa collected a season-high eight saves.

Additionally, Dallacasa etched her named into the ASC record book in the draw as whe extended her scoreless minutes streak to 931:46 before the Cowgirls found the equalizer in the second half. The senior from The Woodlands became the first keeper in conference history to extend a scoreless streak to more than 900 minutes, snapping the old mark of 869:01, set by for HSU two-time All-American Rebecca Roth in 2011.

Both teams now sit tied atop the ASC standings, each with three league games left to play. If both teams win out, the right to host the 2018 ASC Tournament will go down to goal differential. Currently, HSU holds a six-goal lead (20-14) in differential over the Comets.
