RICHARDSON, TX (10.23.18) - The UT Dallas volleyball team collected a seventh straight win Tuesday night as the Comets rolled to 3-0 win over No. 16-ranked UT Tyler in a pivotal in-region match.
The Comets improved to 19-7 after Tuesday's win, entering into the final weekend of the regular season. UTD will close out the regular season in St. Louis, participating in the Baden Invitational, hosted by No. 12-ranked Washington-St. Louis. The Comets open play in the event at 5 p.m. Friday against Millikin before squaring off with DePauw and host Wash. U on Saturday.
UTD used timely runs through the match as the squad avenged an early-season 3-1 loss to the Patriots. The Comets finished the night hitting .346 as a team, the third-best hitting percentage by the program this season.
Dylan Brinkman sparked UTD with a match-best 15 kills, adding 17 digs and three blocks, while
Sydney Riordan added 12 kills in the three-set victory. The Comets collected nine blocks, compared to just four by UTT, and used six aces in the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied, 12-12, in the opening set, the Comets rolled off eight straight points on the service of Fayna Zeng to propel them to a 1-0 match lead. UTD hit .412 in the set, getting five kills each from Brinkman and Riordan.
- UTD had to rally in the second set to grab a 2-0 lead over the Patriots after falling behind 12-7 early in the stanza. A kill by Alyssa Porter would draw the Comets within two points, 15-13, igniting a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the set, 16-15. UTD added a 5-0 run late to pull away. The Comets hit .353 in the second set, getting five kills from Brinkman
- Brinkman added her final five kills in the third set as UTD completed the sweep. The two teams traded leads early before the Comets slowly pull away. UTD hit .282 in the final set with 21 digs.
