UTD Men Advance to ASC Semis With 2-1 Win Over Cowboys

RICHARDSON, TX (10.30.18) - After drawing to a pair of regular-season ties, the UT Dallas men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Hardin-Simmons in the squads' third meeting of the fall, this time coming in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament.

ASC MEN'S SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

The Comets improved to 12-2-2 with Tuesday night's win and will host the final two rounds of the ASC event this weekend at the UTD Soccer Field. Top-seeded UTD will face No. 4 seed East Texas Baptist at 5 p.m. Friday with second-seeded Mary Hardin-Baylor squaring off with third-seeded Concordia Texas at 8 p.m. later that evening. The ASC title match is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Comets and HSU battled to 1-1 ties both on Sept. 8 in San Antonio and Oct. 13 in Abilene, setting up what was expected as tough contest between the long-time ASC rivals. The two teams have now faced off 10 times in the ASC Tournament, including each of the past three seasons.

Jordan Henderson gave the Comets an early 1-0 lead in the 27th minute with his six goal of the season and third goal in two games. Jesse Ardila set up the opening goal of the contest as he sent in a free kick from left side. The HSU defense attempted to clear the entry pass with a header, but Henderson was free on the right side of the net and drilled a shot home past Cowboy keeper Trent Ivy. Before the end of the opening half, the Comets doubled their lead when Jackson Huckabee collected his first goal of the season, all alone in front the goal after Ardila streaked down the left side and centered the ball.

HSU (4-11-2) avoided the shutout with a goal in the 86th minute with Kiko Redondo scoring after finding a loose ball in front of the Comet net.

The Comets ended the night with eight shots, five on frame, compared to 14 by HSU. The Cowboys finished with eight shots on goal. Henderson and Merek Byckovski each took a team-high two shots while Comet keeper Chase Therrien made a season-high seven saves.
