Comets Headed to ASC Title Match After Double OT Own Goal

RICHARDSON, TX (11.02.18) - With less than two minutes left in the second overtime period, the UT Dallas men's soccer team was the beneficiary on own goal by East Texas Baptist Friday night to push the Comets to their fifth American Southwest Conference championship game in seven seasons.

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

The Comets, who improved to 13-2-2 with Friday's 1-0 win over ETBU, will return to the pitch at 1 p.m. Sunday where they will play for a fifth league title in program history. UTD will play the winner of Friday's second semifinal match between Mary Hardin-Baylor and Concordia Texas.

UTD dominated control over the first half but could not muster early goal, despite out-shooting the Tigers, 10-5. The two teams then traded five shots each in the second half before heading into overtime. Neither team truly threatened the first overtime period before the Comets once again controlled possession in the second 10-minute extra period.

With 1:36 left before penalty kicks, Comet Jesse Ardila sent in a short pass from the right to teammate Jordan Henderson. In the battle for the ball, ETBU defender Aaron Lopez made contact with the ball and pushed it past Tiger keeper Bryant Botello to end the game.

The Comets finished the match with 20 shots, but only four on frame, with Brian Rahmoune leading the way with five shots. UTD keeper Chase Therrien ended the contest four saves as the Comets posted their eighth shutout of the season.
