Comets Take Top Spot in ASC With 3-0 Home Win Over CTX

RICHARDSON, TX (10.06.18) - The UT Dallas men's soccer team is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the American Southwest Conference after the Comets bounced Concordia Texas, 3-0, Saturday night at the UTD Soccer Field.

The Comets (now 8-1-1, 6-0 ASC) got an early goal by defender Brad Rivenes to grab a quick 1-0 just one minute prior to a lightning strike in the area that delayed the contest more than two hours. When the game resumed two hours and five minutes later with 19:23 left in the opening half, the Comets would ride the Rivenes goal to a 1-0 lead at the break. UTD tacked on insurance goals by Jordan Henderson and Donny Smith in the 71st and 85th minutes, respectively, to secure the win and hand the visiting Tornados (7-3-1, 6-1 ASC) their first ASC loss of the season.

UTD now has five games left to play in the regular season and control its own destiny to host the ASC Tournament in November. The Comets will look continue their perfect run through conference play Thursday when they visit McMurry in Abilene. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Comets finished the game with 12 shots, five on frame, while limiting CTX to just seven shots, three on target. The Tornados did not register a shot on goal in the opening half.

Smith led the Comets with three shots, two on goal, while Henderson and Jovi Munoz each took two shots. UTD keeper Chase Therrien, in his second start of the season, posted a clean sheet while making three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rivenes opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a back-door header off a Jesse Ardila corner kick. The goal was Rivenes' first of the season and first since the 2016 season.
  • Henderson added the Comets' second tally, his second of the fall, in the 71st minute thanks to a cross from the right from teammate Alfredo Kaegi.
  • Smith's fourth goal of the season came in the 85th minute after a cross from deep left from Jardel Huate that was redirected via header by Zach Till. Smith one-timed the header from Till to the side netting.
