GEORGETOWN, TX (11.21.18) - The No. 14-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the young season Wednesday afternoon, earning a 66-53 non-conference win over Southwestern.
The Comets shot just 38.7 percent from the field over their in-region rivals, but scored 22 points off of 16 Southwestern turnovers to remain unbeaten on the year. Reigning American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week
Katie Gunther led UTD with 17 points, pacing three Comets in double digits against the host Pirates.
Raenett Hughes added 12 points while
Mia Spennato finished with 10 points. Gunther, who was 6-for-12 from the field, also led the Comets with eight rebounds.
Southwestern (now 0-3) scored the opening points of the game, but the Comets answered with 10 straight points to take a 10-2 lead midway through the opening period and never looked back. The Pirates would rally back in the second quarter, knotting the game at 19-19, but UTD bounced back and took a 32-27 lead into the locker room. The Comets would then outscored Southwestern, 16-12, in the third to take a nine-point lead into the final period.
The Comets hit 24-of-62 shots from the floor and connected on 7-of-19 three-pointers (36.8%) and were 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free-throw line. UTD held a 39-35 advantage over the Pirates in rebounding.
UTD continues its six-game road swing to open the season on Saturday with a 3 p.m. tip-off at Austin College in another non-conference outing.
