ALPINE, TX (11.29.18) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team extended its winning streak to five consecutive victories Thursday night as the Comets rolled to a 83-50 road win over Sul Ross State in American Southwest Conference crossover play.
The Comets, who improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 against ASC foes, used a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures in the lop-sided win over the reigning ASC West Division champion Lobos.
Hans Burwitz led UTD with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and added 10 rebounds, both game highs, as he recorded his third 'double-double' of the season.
Jalen Weber finished with 13 points while both
Dimitrius Underwood and
Curtis Allen each contributed 12 points.
UTD shot better than 50 percent as a team for the fourth time in seven games to start the season as the Comets hit 35-of-68 shots (51.5%) from the field against the host Lobos. The Comets were 9-of-19 (47.4%) from three-point range and made just eight trips to the foul, going 4-for-8.
The Comets started to pull away from SRSU late in the opening half as UTD grabbed a double-digit advantage, 30-19, with 6:34 left before the break on a Burwitz lay up. UTD would take a 22-point lead into the locker room, leading the Lobos, 43-21, after shooting 55.9 percent (19-of-34) as a team in the opening 20 minutes.
UTD then opened the second half on a 13-0 run, getting three-pointers from both Allen and Burwitz, to snag a 56-21 lead with 15:44 left to play. The Comets would hold off all come-back attempts by SRSU in the period, leading by as many as 36 points on two occasions.
The Comets limited SRSU to just 28.3 percent accuracy (17-of-60) while forcing 14 Lobo turnovers.
UTD will continue ASC crossover play Saturday when the Comets visit Howard Payne. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Brownwood.
