SEGUIN, TX (03.14.18) - The UT Dallas softball team kicked off its three-day, six-game stretch in south Texas Wednesday with a doubleheader split with Messiah on the campus of Texas Lutheran.
The Comets (6-7) opened the afternoon with a 7-4 loss, but bounced back for a 4-3, nine-inning victory in the second game. UTD will square off with No. 2 TLU in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader Thursday.
GAME 1 - MESSIAH 7, UTD 4
The Comets chased Messiah all game as the Falcons earned a 7-4 victory in Wednesday's opener.
Already down 3-0 in the 3rd, UTD got on the board with a two-run single by
Hope Griffith, scoring
Melissa Livermore and
Stefanie Polderman. However, the Falcons countered with single runs in the 4th and 5th to pull ahead 5-2. The Comets tallied two more runs in the 5th, thanks to a sac fly by
Emily Schroeder and an RBI single by
Amber Williams, but would leave the tying run on base. Messiah tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the 6th.
Elizabeth Brann (0-1) was handed the loss as she was the first of four Comet pitchers to take the circle. Brann gave up one unearned run on three hits in 2.0 innings of work. Williams was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Griffith was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
GAME 2 - UTD 4, MESSIAH 3 (9 INN.)
The Comets fell behind early in the second game of the day, but rallied for a 4-3 win in nine-innings.
Down 2-0 in the 4th, UTD knotted the game with an RBI fielder's choice by Williams followed by an RBI single by
Kendra Litchfield. Neither team scored again until the 7th, when the Comets took their first lead of the day with a two-out single to center by Polderman, scoring pinch runner Kenneday Zimmerman from second base. However, the Falcons would re-tie the game in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings.
After a scoreless 8th, the Comets would play the game-winning run in the top of the 9th with a sac fly by
Ravin Wilson, scoring Litchfield.
Karen Crane (4-3) pitched the full 9.0 innings for UTD, giving up two earned runs on eight scattered hits. She struck out three and walked two. Wilson finished 2-for-3 with the game-winning RBI.
