Comets Drop Pair to Close NCAA D-III East-West Challenge

CLAREMONT, CA (09.15.18) - After picking up its second win over a nationally ranked opponent in a week on Friday, the UT Dallas volleyball team was handed a pair of losses to ranked opponents Saturday to close the NCAA Division III East-West Challenge, hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Comets (6-4) opened the final day of the event at the Roberts Pavilion with a hard-fought 3-2 loss to No. 3 C-M-S before falling to No. 6 Emory, 3-1. UTD will return to action Tuesday night when the Comets host LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference play. Match time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.

No. 3 C-M-S 3, UTD 2
The Comets hit .208 as a team and collected a season-high 16 total blocks, but could not earn a win over the No. 3-ranked Athenas, falling in five sets. Sydney Riordan and Jillian Via each contributed 14 kills while Lauren Schilling had 10 kills and eight blocks in the close defeat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Comets hit .268 in the opening set, but dropped a close 25-23 decision to the Athenas to fall behind 1-0. Riordan had six kills in the set.
  • UTD rallied for a 25-18 win in the second set as Via and Alyssa Porter had four kills and the team hit .306, compared to just .105 by host C-M-S.
  • The Athenas responded with a 25-18 win of their own in the third set as they held UTD to just .113 hitting as a team. Via had a team-high four kills in the stanza.
  • The Comets again bounced back, hitting .250 in the fourth set en route to a 25-14 win to even the match, 2-2. Via had four kills while Schilling and E.C. Stanzel each had three kills.
  • C-M-S finished the match with a 15-12 victory, holding the Comets to a .091 hitting percentage. UTD collected just six kills in the set, but had four blocks to keep in the contest.

No. 6 Emory 3, UTD 1
The Comets suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season as they dropped a four-set decision to the Eagles to close out the weekend event. Riordan led UTD with 17 kills while Schilling added 11 kills and seven more blocks. The Comets hit .234 in the defeat, compared to .217 by Emory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emory opened the match with a 25-22 win in the first set, hitting .308 as a team. Riordan had four kills and three digs for the Comets as UTD hit .281 in the close loss.
  • The Comets rebounded with 25-21 win in the second stanza as Riordan had five kills and trio of Via, Schilling and Alex Nolan each contributed four kills. The Comets hit an impressive .463 as they evened the match, 1-1.
  • The Eagles responded with a 25-22 win in the third set and a 25-21 victory in the clinching fourth set for the victory.
