SAN ANTONIO, TX (09.08.18) - The UT Dallas volleyball team closed out the Trinity Fall Classic Volleyball Tournament Saturday with one of the biggest wins in program history, upsetting No. 5-ranked and event host Trinity in five sets.
The Comets (4-2) dropped their first match of the day, 3-1 to perennial regional power La Verne, but bounced back with the 3-2 victory over in-region rival Trinity to wrap up the event with a 2-2 record.
Freshman
Gabi Sommerfield led the Comets with 10 kills in UTD's opening match of the day as UTD claimed an opening-set win over La Verne, before dropping the next three games. The Comets hit .169 as a squad, averaging 12.8 kills and 18.3 digs per set in the loss.
Jillian Via added eight kills while
Sydney Riordan and
Alex Nolan each had six kills.
Nolan would lead three Comets in double digits in the late match as she finished with 15 put-aways in UTD's 3-2 win over Trinity. Via and
Dylan Brinkman each added 11 kills as the Comets hit .152 as a team with 10 total blocks.
The Comets dropped the first set to TU, 26-24, but bounced back with 25-23 and 25-20 wins in the second and third sets. The host Tigers responded with a 25-19 win in the fourth set before UTD opened the fifth set with a 4-0 run en route to a 15-12 victory.
UTD will open American Southwest Conference East Division play Tuesday night when they host East Texas Baptist. Match time is 7 p.m.at the UTD Activity Center.
