TYLER, TX (01.17.19) - Junior guard
Dimitrius Underwood poured in a season-high 32 points and recorded his seventh 'double-double' of the season Thursday night as the UT Dallas men's basketball team downed rival Texas-Tyler, 83-71.
Underwood, a native of Mesquite, topped 30 points for just the third time in his career and finished three points shy of his career-best set last spring as he pushed the Comets' winning streak to six consecutive games. He closed the win going 13-for-26 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, extending his perfect run to 23 straight free throws dating back to last month. Underwood added a game-high 15 rebounds for the Comets.
After getting into an early eight-point hole, the Comets rallied midway through the opening half to force a 28-28 tie with 1:42 remaining before the break after a
Hans Burwitz lay up. UTD added a three-pointer from
Jalen Weber and four points form Underwood in the final minute to snag a five-point cushion, 35-30, at halftime.
The Comets (13-3) quickly extended their lead to double digits with just under 18 minutes left when
Michael Forster drained a trey to push UTD to a 42-32 advantage over the host Patriots. UTT made a push to cut the deficit to five points near the midway point of the second half, but the Comets answered with a 22-8 run over the next several minutes to put the game away.
UTD finished the game shooting 44.7 percent (34-of-76) as a team, making 7-of-25 three-pointers (28%), while making 8-of-10 shots form the free-throw line. Burwtiz added 13 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh 'double-double' as well, matching Underwood for the team lead. Weber also had 13 points while
Kelden Pruitt came off the bench for 10 points.
The Comets return to American Southwest Conference East Division play Saturday afternoon when they visit Ozarks. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Clarksville, Ark.
