JACKSON, MS (01.24.19) - After a sluggish start, the UT Dallas men's basketball team kept its winning streak alive Thursday night with a 72-71 come-from-behind road win over Belhaven in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
After missing their first six shots of the night, the ASC East-leading Comets found themselves in an early hole and trailed BU by as many as 14 points late in the opening half before turning things around. UTD closed out the first period with a 6-2 spurt to cut the Blazer lead to just 10 points, 44-34, at the break, and then opened the second half on a 22-4 run to not only take the lead but build an eight-point cushion, 56-48, with just over 10 minutes left to play.
The Comets, who improved to 15-3 overall and 8-2 in ASC play with the win, had to hold off host BU down the stretch to collect their eighth straight victory. The Blazers slowly picked away at the UTD lead down the stretch, drawing the game within a single bucket on multiple occasions. BU climbed back within one point with 36 seconds remaining on a Justin Jones three-point play, which forced the Comets to play their next possession with a shot clock. UTD's jumper bounced off the rim and was rebounded by the Blazers, giving the host a chance for a last-second upset. After timeouts by both squads, the Blazers would take the ball the length of the floor over the final 5.1 seconds, but
Kelden Pruitt rejected the potential game-winner as time expired.
Dimitrius Underwood recorded his eighth straight 20-point performance as he closed out the win with 29 points and 12 rebounds, both game highs, for his ASC-leading ninth 'double-double' of the season. Underwood was just 8-for-20 from the field but added a 12-for-16 performance from the free-throw line.
Hans Burwitz added 11 points while
Jalen Weber finished with 10 points.
The Comets finished the night shooting just 37.5 percent (22-of-58) from the field and and hitting just 3-of-15 three-pointers (20%). However, UTD went to the free-throw line a season-high 37 times, coming away with a season-best 25 points from the charity stripe.
UTD will look for a ninth consecutive win Saturday afternoon when the Comets close out their current four-game road trip at Louisiana College. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Pineville, La.
