PINEVILLE, LA (01.26.19) - Junior guard
Victoria Pena scored a career-high 35 points as the No. 23-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team extended its season-long winning streak to six games with a 78-57 road win over Louisiana College Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference East Division play. In the process, the Comets locked down a berth into the ASC Championship Tournament for the 13th consecutive season.
A native of Helotes, Pena drained 9-of-16 three-pointers as the reigning ASC East Player of the Year bested her previous career high by nine points in the blowout victory. Pena's 16 three-point attempts set a program record while her nine made treys ended just one shy of the career mark set by former Comet Lyndsey Smith during the 2010-11 campaign. She finished the victory shooting 11-for-24 from the field overall, setting a UTD record for field goal attempts, and added a perfect 4-for-4 performance from the free-throw line. Pena added six rebounds and four assists in her fourth game this season with at least 20 points.
The Comets (now 15-4, 9-2 ASC) jumped out to a quick lead thanks to Pena's 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the arc in the opening quarter to snag a 27-10 lead after the first 10 minutes of the contest and were never threatened. UTD secured its first 20-point lead of the afternoon, 33-13, at the 6:28 mark of the second period on a
Raenett Hughes' lay up and cruised to a 39-17 halftime advantage.
UTD extended its lead to as many as 31 points early in the fourth period before resting its starters. The Comets closed the game shooting 46.9 percent (30-of-64) from the field while connecting on 12-of-31 three-pointers (38.7%), and shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the foul line. UTD dominated the boards, out-rebounding the host Wildcats, 47-28.
Pena was one of three Comets to reach double figures in the lop-sided victory as
Kelley Skinner finished with 12 points along with a game-high nine rebounds and Hughes added 11 points.
After a perfect run through the first half of the ASC East slate, the Comets will open round of divisional play Thursday when they host these same Wildcats. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
