RICHARDSON, TEXAS (10.11.19) - The UT Dallas volleyball team kept its unblemished American Southwest Conference record intact Friday afternoon, tying a 6-year old match record by hitting .468 as a team on its way to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-9 sweep over Belhaven University in the UTD Activity Center.
The Comets (14-3, 8-0) connected on 49 of 95 kill attempts with just five attack errors, tying a mark set September 20, 2013 against Mississippi College. UTD meets Centenary Friday night in a non-conference matchup before hosting ASC foe East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon at 2 pm.
Freshman
Catherine Croft led the barrage Friday afternoon by hitting .545 with 13 kills despite sitting out half of the final set against the Blazers (7-11, 2-6). Croft added three assists and two services aces to her stat line.
Seniors
Lauren Schilling and
Jillian Via combined for 17 kills while senior
Alyssa Porter and sophomore Allison Porter had seven apiece. Via and freshman
Abby Jones combined for 28 digs while senior setter
Caroline Shecterle quarterbacked the attack with 25 assists.
The first set started out tight as the Blazers forced a tie at 11-11, but UTD then opened things up with a 8-2 run to go up 19-13 on a Schilling kill. Belhaven trimmed the lead to as close as 20-16 before UTD reeled off five of the next six points to take Set 1, 25-17.
Set 2 got off to a similar start with the Blazers still within two at 13-11. This time, however, the Comets soared away with a 25-14 victory, finishing the set with a 12-3 run.
UTD wasted no time staking claim the third set and the match, jumping ahead 12-3 out of the gate. The closest Belhaven ever got again was seven points (14-7) as the Comets pulled away with a 11-2 finish.
