Comets Edged by UMHB in Clash of ASC Division Leaders

AUSTIN, TX (10.18.19) - Despite a dominant start to the match, the UT Dallas volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday night ot open the second of two American Southwest Conference Crossover Tournaments of the season. This weekend's event is being hosted by Concordia Texas.

The Comets (16-4, 9-1 ASC) rolled to an opening-set 25-15 win over UMHB to kick off the match between the two ASC divisional leaders and secured a  2-0 load over the defending ASC champion Cru with a 27-25 win in the second set. However, the Cru (17-6, 11-0 ASC) responded with a 25-19 in the third and an extended win of their own, 27-25, in the fourth to even the match, 2-2. After a back-and-forth start to the fifth set, the Cru slowly pulled away for a 9-5 lead over UTD and would snap the Comets' 13-match winning streak after 15-10 win.

UTD hit .552 as a team in the first set, committing just one error in 29 swings, but cooled off as the night went on. The Comets would hit .238 in the second set and under .200 for each of the remaining three sets.

Alyssa Porter led the Comets with 15 kills, hitting .444 for the match, adding six blocks. Jillian Via and Catherine Croft each added 14 kills while Allison Owen had 13 kills The Comets finished the match with eight total blocks and five aces.

The Comets will look to bounce back Saturday with a pair of matches against ASC West opponents to close the event. UTD will host Concordia Texas at 10 a.m. followed by Howard Payne at 2 p.m. The Comets need just one more league win to secure the ASC East Division title and earn the right host the ASC Tournament next month.
