JACKSON, MS (12.18.19) - Struggles from three-point range led to a 75-65 non-conference loss by the UT Dallas men's basketball team at Millsaps Wednesday afternoon as the Comets opened a two-game southern road swing.
The Comets dropped to 4-3 on the young season after Wednesday's loss and will look to bounce back Friday afternoon with they visit Hendrix in another non-conference road game. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
UTD hit just 3-of-15 three-pointers (20%) in the contest while the host Majors (now 7-3) shot nearly 40 percent (12-of-31) from beyond the arc. The Comets were much better inside three-point range, finishing the game shooting 41.2 percent (21-of-51) as a squad, but missed 10 free throws.
Tied 30-30 at the break, Millsaps snagged a three-point advantage after a trey by Ryan McLaurin to open the second and never relinquished the lead. Including a three-pointer by Buck Blanz with eight seconds left in the first half, the Majors used a 15-3 run to turn the tables on what was a double-digit lead by the Comets midway through the opening period. McLaurin lifted Millsaps to a 42-33 lead with 15:58 left ot play after a fast break three-pointer.
The Comets used a 6-0 run over the next minute to claw within three points and would draw within three points on two other occasions in the second half before the Majors pulled away for their first double-digit lead of the afternoon, 61-50, on a pair of Kaleb Jenkins free throws with 8:03 left in the game.
UTD made one final charge late in the contest, cutting the Major lead to just two points, 67-65, with 1:23 remaining on a dunk by
Michael Forster, which capped an 11-1 run. However, Millsaps scored the final eight points of the game, hitting 6-of-6 free throws down the stretch.
Jalen Weber and
Hans Burwitz finished with 17 points each while Forster added 12 points. Burwitz added a game-high 12 rebounds.
