No. 18 Comets Set Up ASC East Title Clash After Win at LETU

LONGVIEW, TX (02.14.19) - Thanks to a 59-44 road win over LeTourneau Thursday night, the No. 18-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team will be riding an 11-game winning streak into Saturday's battled with No. 13-ranked East Texas Baptist, with the winning claiming the title of the American Southwest Conference's East Division.

With Thursday's win over over host LETU, the Comets improved to 20-4 overall and 13-2 against ASC competition and will play for the program's third consecutive and fourth all-time divisional crown. UTD and the defending ASC champion Tigers will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday in Marshall.

The Comets used a balanced scoring attack to earn a win in their first road game in three weeks as Raenett Hughes led all scorers with 12 points and both Katie Gunther and Tyra Banks each added 11 points. UTD shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field but struggled from three-point range in the victory, connecting on just 1-of-13 three-pointers (7.7%).

UTD started the night with an old-fashioned three-point play by Gunther and never trailed as the Comets improved to 9-0 against ASC East opponents, including a 73-61 home win over ETBU on Jan. 10.  The Comets secured its first double-digit lead, 18-7, after a three-point play by Banks with 3:15 left in the opening period and would not lead by fewer than 10 points for the remainder of the contest.

The Comets led LETU, 22-12, after the first 10 minutes and maintained that 10-point lead, 32-22, at the break. UTD then shut down the host Jackets, 15-6, in the third quarter before limited minutes of its starting lineup in the final quarter.

UTD held a 43-34 rebounding advantage over the Yellow Jackets and forced 16 LETU turnovers.
