No. 18 Comets Upset No. 13 ETBU, Claim Third Straight ASC East Title

MARSHALL, TX (02.16.19) - The No. 18-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team held the top three-point shooting team in the American Southwest Conference to 1-for-21 accuracy from beyond the arc as the Comets upset No. 13-ranked East Texas Baptist, 71-62, to claim their third straight ASC East Division title.

The Comets picked up their 12th consecutive victory to close out the regular season and will enter the ASC Tournament next weekend with a 21-4 overall record. UTD wrapped up its third straight, and fourth overall, divisional crown with a 14-2 league mark. The Comets were a perfect 12-0 against teams from the ASC East this season. UTD will serve as the No. 1 seed from the ASC East at the league's postseason event, starting Thursday, Feb. 21, in Belton, hosted by ASC West champion Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Sophomore Raenett Hughes poured in a career-high 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting, while adding six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Victoria Pena joined Hughes in double figures as she finished 14 points and eight rebounds. Kelley Skinner snagged a game-high nine boards.

UTD turned a turned a three-point deficit early in the second period into a 16-point halftime lead as the Comets took control of the contest with a 42-26 cushion at the intermission. The host Tigers clawed back in the third period, outscoring UTD in the quarter, 19-11, but the Comets held off the defending ASC champions down the stretch.

After a back-and-forth opening quarter, the Tigers would secure their largest lead of the afternoon, 18-15, with 8:53 left in the second frame. However, the Comets would use a 25-5 run over the next eight minutes for a 20-point turnaround and a 17-point advantage, 40-23, after a pair of Pena free throws with just under minute left before half.

ETBU climbed within four points early the fourth period, but the Tigers' struggles from three-point range would not allow the home team to regain a lead. The Tigers missed their final seven shots from beyond the arc.

The Comets finished the win shooting 44.4 percent (24-of-54) from the field as a team, making 6-of-17 three-pointers (35.3%), and hit 17-of-27 shots (63%) from the free-throw line. UTD forced 24 Tiger turnovers.
