LONGVIEW, TX (2.17.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team improved to 2-0 on the young season Sunday afternoon after a 7-2 road victory over LeTourneau.
The Comets took 2-of-3 doubles contests against LETU before snagging five singles wins en route to their second victory of the opening weekend of the spring season.
The UTD duo of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Haydn Steffes opening the scoring with a 8-6 win over LETU's Cressio/Schmidt before top-flighted tandem of
Mario Jelev and
Giovanni Zamboni claimed an 8-5 win over Henson/Farris.
Jelev then kicked off single play with a 7-5, 6-0, over Jimmie Henson, collecting his 32nd career singles victory to tie the UTD men's program record. Jelev joins former Comet
Bryan Leib (2011-13) atop the singles list.
Vaithianathan would follow quickly with a straight-set win of his own, downing Zac Crowley-Kurth, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.
Eric Chen would lock down the team victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-2, 6-1, win over James Estrada.
Mason Gillespie (No. 6) and Zamboni (No. 2) would also add singles victories.
The Comets will return to action Saturday, Mar. 2., when they visit Southwestern in Georgetown.
