Mario Jelev became the program's all-time singles victories leader Monday after leading the Comets to a 7-2 win over Wisconsin-La Crosse to open the squad's Spring Break trip.
With a 6-4, 6-2, win over UWL's Alex Alt at No. 1 singles, Jelev now has 33 career victories in singles for the Comets, sliding past former record holder
Bryan Leib, who had 32 wins during his career from 2011-13.
The Comets (3-0) opened the match with a pair of doubles victories over UWL, including a quick 8-0 win by teammates
Eric Chen and Brandon Giordonelli at No. 3. Jelev and
Giovanni Zamboni partnered up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 singles as well for UTD.
Haydn Steffes opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-1, win at No. 4 while Jelev's win at No. 1 gave the Comets a 4-1 advantage. UTD locked up the team victory when Zamboni locked down a 6-4, 6-3, win over UWL's Kyle Woogahn.
Jed De Luna (No. 6, 7-6, 6-4) and
Ashwin Vaithianathan (No. 3, 6-7, 6-4, 10-5) also added singles wins for the Comets.
UTD returns to the court Tuesday for an 8 a.m. match with Lafayette.
