Comets Blank Mary Hardin-Baylor, 11-0, in Midweek Duel

RICHARDSON, TX (02.26.19) - Six Comet pitchers combined for the first shutout of the season as the UT Dallas baseball team used two big innings to roll to an 11-0 road win over Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Comets (5-6) scored four runs in the 5th and six in the 9th to pick up their third win in four outings after a 2-5 start to the season. UTD will now open American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three-game home series with Hardin-Simmons. The two teams will play a 12 p.m. doubleheader Friday before a 12 p.m. single game Saturday at the UTD Baseball Field.

UTD opened the scoring with a single run in the 4th on an RBI groundout by Ryan Burciaga before picking up four runs on just three hits in the 5th to pull ahead, 5-0. The Comets doubled their lead with an RBI double by Jacob Perry and then Thomas Craig blasted his team-leading sixth homer of the season to tack on three more runs.

The Comets would close the game with a six-run 9th frame, using just four hits and two UMHB errors. UTD loaded the bases with three straight walks to open the 9th before Aaron Fanning used a single up the middle to plate two runs and lift the Comets to a 7-0 cushion. Peyton Becker and Craig would add RBI singles in the frame before the Comets completed the inning.

Craig, the reigning ASC Hitter of the Week, finished 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored while Becker was 2-for-3 and Matt Mikusek was 2-fof-6.

Orion Drymond started the game on the mound for the Comets and tossed the first two innings, giving up two hits with two strikeouts. Mitch Stark then pitched a scoreless 3rd before Jordan Box (1-0) went 3.0 strong innings and earned the win. Adam Cook, Nick Gambirasi and Carter Cochrane each added scoreless innings.
