RICHARDSON, TX (02.07.19) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team broke the school record for field goal percentage in a game as the Comets outgunned Ozarks, 95-72, Thursday in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets improved to 18-4 overall with the victory and remain atop the ASC East with an 11-3 mark with just two league games left on the schedule. UTD will take a shot break from conference play Saturday when the Comets host Texas-Tyler in the squad's final regular-season home game. Tip-off is 3 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Dimitrius Underwood led all scorers with 23 points while
Hans Burwitz added 22 points and
Curtis Allen finished with 20 points as the trio accounted for 65 of the Comets' 95 points in the victory. Underwood was 9-for-14 from the floor, hitting a pair of three-pointers, while adding eight rebounds and seven assists, both game highs. Burwitz was an efficient 9-for-10 from the field, adding four boards, while Allen hit 6-of-7 three-pointers attempted.
The Comets got off to a slow start as the visiting Eagles opened up a 20-11 advantage just more than seven minutes into the contest. UTD answered, however, with 13 unanswered points to snag a 24-20Â lead after a
Jordan Castillo fast-break lay up with just under nine before the break. The Comets then slowly pulled away and extended their lead to double digits with three minutes left before halftime and held a 48-35 advantage at intermission. UTD shot better than 70 percent from the floor as a team in the opening 20 minutes, making 6-of-10 three-pointers.
UTD cooled in the second half, but not by much, as the Comets ended the night shooting 67.3 (37-of-55), which break the previous single-game best by the program of 64.4 against Texas-Arlington on Nov. 23, 2005. The Comets finished the game shooting 60 percent (12-of-20) from three-point range but hit just 9-of-13 (69.2%) free throws.
