RICHARDSON, TX (02.09.19) - The No. 19-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day Saturday afternoon with a 64-45 home win over rival UT Tyler, extending the Comets' winning streak to 10 consecutive games.
The Comets improved to 19-4 with the win and will return to American Southwest Conference East Division play Thursday when they visit LeTourneau. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m. in Longview.
Raenett Hughes led all scorers with 18 points while
Victoria Pena recorded her second 'double-double' of the season with 15 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Pena also matched a career-high with seven assists in the victory.
UTD forced seven Patriot turnovers in the opening six minutes as the Comets jumped out to a quick 17-5 and never trailed in the contest. UTT slowly clawed back late in the second period, cutting the Comet halftime to just four points, 31-27. UTD struggled from the field in the opening half, shooting just 32.5 percent (13-of-40) as a team and hitting just 2-of-15 three-pointers (13.3%).
The Comets took back control in the third period, outscoring UTT, 17-7, to take a 14-point advantage, 48-34, into the final quarter. UTD widened its margin to as many as 21 points late in the game before settling for the 19-point victory.
UTD finished the game shooting 35.1 percent (26-of-74) as a squad and hit 6-of-29 three-pointers (20.7%). The Comets shot just 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the foul, but closed out the game by forcing 22 turnovers.
