Comets Rally Past Southwestern For 9-6 Midweek Victory

RICHARSON, TX (03.19.19) - The UT Dallas baseball team had just five hits but took advantage of late opportunities as the Comets rallied for a 9-6 home win over Southwestern Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.

Jacob Perry's bases-clearing double with two outs in the bottom of the 6th was the difference mark as his two-bagger give the Comets (9-13) their first lead of the day, 7-6, as UTD managed just three hits as a team to that point of the contest. Thomas Craig immediately followed with an RBI single up the middle, scoring Perry, before the Comet tacked on an insurance run in the 7th on an single up the middle by Dylan Palmer.

Southwestern starter Aaron Clark pitched into the 6th inning for the visiting Pirates, holding UTD to just one hit before loading the bases and making his exit. Perry's two-out double on Pirate reliever Trey Schwarz' first pitch hugged the left-field line. Clark would finish the afternoon giving  up seven earned runs on just one hit with seven walks.

The Pirates (10-5) struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the 2nd before UTD would get one tally back in the bottom of the frame on a Patch Healy groundout after a pair of Comet walks to start the inning. Southwestern added three run sin the top of the 5th, using a pair of solo home runs, to take a 5-1 lead.

The Comets got their first hit of the afternoon with one out in the bottom of the 5th when Matt Mikusek laced a double to left, giving UTD runners at second and third. Austin Blanford would then scamper home after a Clark wild pitch, cutting the Southwestern lead to 5-2. Mikusek later scoring in the frame on a Pirate field error of a Perry ground ball.

Southwestern then added its final run in the top of the 6th to regain a three-run cushion, 6-3. The Comets would score five runs in the bottom of the 6th, starting with a sacrifice fly by Peyton Becker.

Comet starter Orion Drymond did not factor into the decision after giving up two earned runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Carter Cochrane (1-0) would collect his first collegiate victory, tossing two inning of late relief, giving up one run on three hits. Logan McPherson picked up his second save of the season, tossing two scoreless frames to close the win, allowing just one hit while striking out three.

Perry finished 1-for-5 with four RBI while Zach Jordan was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. 

After taking the weekend off, the Comets return to the diamond next Tuesday for a 2 p.m. home game with Mary Hardin-Baylor.
