RICHARDSON, TX (03.26.19) - Despite coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning down eight, the UT Dallas baseball team brought the game-tying run to the plate before dropping an 11-7 decision to Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday afternoon in non-conference play.
Trailing 11-3 and down to their final three outs, the Comets (9-14) collected a two-run, bases-loaded single from
Thomas Craig with one out in the 9th to cut the Cru lead to just six runs. UTD later used back-to-back two-out, bases-loaded walks drawn by
Aaron Fanning and
Dylan Palmer to climb back within striking distance, but UMHB pitcher Ross Baer struck out
Peyton Becker on a full count to preserve the victory for the visiting Cru.
The Cru (6-18) opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the 1st on four hits and UTD's only error of the contest. UMHB then added to its lead in teh top of the 3rd with a single run to extend the Cru's cushion to 4-0.
UTD got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd with a Craig double to right, scoring
Jacob Perry, but the Cru responded with four runs in the top of the 5th and two more in the 6th to extend their advantage to eight runs, 10-2. The Comets picked up another run in the bottom of the 6th on an
Austin Blanford double, scoring
Ryan Sloma. The Cur added a final run in the top of the 9th to regain an eight-run lead.
The Comets out-hit UMHB, 14-13, but left 10 runners on base and were the victims of three double play.
Zach Jordan led UTD with a 3-for-5 performance while Blanford was 2-for-3. Craig and
Ryan Burciaga were both 2-for-5 in the loss.
UTD returns to American Southwest Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Concordia Texas. The two teams will play a 4 p.m. doubleheader Friday before a single 1 p.m. game on Saturday in Austin.
