RICHARDSON, TX (03.30.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team rebounded from its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon with a 7-2 home win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference West Division play.
The Comets (now 7-1, 1-1 ASC West) opened the match with three quick doubles wins and collected wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to secure the team victory before the visiting Cru snagged a pair of singles wins late in the match.
The doubles duo of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and Hayden Steffes were the first tandem to collect a win against UMHB, earning an 8-1 win over Jace Mahan/Cole Weiss at No. 2. Top-flighted
Mario Jelev and
Giovanni Zamboni added an 8-2 win before
Zach Tavallaee and
Brandon Giordonelli pitched in an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Zamboni quickly dispatched UMHB's Robert Galligan, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles to give the Comets a 4-0 lead and Jelev added a 6-0, 6-4, win over Brian Martin at No. 1 to lift UTD to the team victory.
The Comets added singles wins by Vaithianathan (No. 3, 6-3, 6-1) and Jed Du Luna (No. 5, 6-4, 6-3) to close the match.
UTD returns to action Friday, April 5, when the Comets visit Hardin-Simmons in another ASC West match. Match time is 4 p.m. in Abilene.
