ABILENE, TX (04.05.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team rolled off its second straight divisional win Friday afternoon as the Comets downed Hardin-Simmons, 6-3, on the road in American Southwest Conference West Division play.
The Comets took 2-of-3 doubles matches against HSU and added four singles wins to secure its second straight division victory and improve to 2-1 in ASC West play. The tandem of
Eric Chen and
Brandon Giordonelli teamed up for an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles and the duo of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Haydn Steffes added an identical 8-5 decision at No. 2 to lift UTD to a lead heading into singles action.
Already up 2-1, Steffes opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-2, win over Holt Fields at No. 4, but the host Cowboys (5-7, 1-1 ASC) answered with straight-set wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to even the match, 3-3.Â
Giovanni Zamboni gave the Comets back the lead with a 6-2, 6-2, win over HSU's Nathaniel Schoendorft at No. 2 before
Jed De Luna and Chen each added late victories to seal the team win. De Luna's 6-1, 6-4, win over Christopher Beavers at No. 6 locked up the win for the Comets while Chen was the only singles player for UTD to got to three sets, edging Joshua Lopez, 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 13-11, at No. 5.
The Comets (now 8-1 overall) continue their Abilene road trip Sunday with another ASC West road match at McMurry. Match time is 3 p.m.
