RICHARDSON, TX (04.12.19) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team will host the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament for the first time in program history after a 9-0 divisional home win over Sul Ross State Friday afternoon secured the squad's top spot in the ASC West this spring.
The Comets improved to 7-1 overall after Friday's quick victory and are now 5-0 in ASC West play with one divisional match left to play.Â
UTD opened the duel with three brisk 8-0 victories in doubles action. Third-flighted
Vivian Sepulveda and
JoLynn Scriven opened the match with a blanking before the No. 2 squad of
Sophie Farmer and
Elizabeth Labra added an 8-0 win of their own. The Comets' top squad of
Kathy Joseph and Sinhdu Ravula closed doubles with another shutout, improving to 8-0 as a tandem this spring.
Kathy Joseph was the first Comet to complete a singles win over the Lobos as she downed SRSU's Kelyn Likiaksa, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1. Joseph is now also 8-0 in singles play this season.
Frida Muedsam gave UTD the win with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Shaynce Ramos at No. 3 singles.
Sumvruta Iyengar (No. 2, 6-1, 6-0),
Stephanie Joseph (No. 4, 6-0, 6-0),
Adrienne Large (No. 5, 6-0, 6-0) and Scriven (No. 6, 6-0, 6-0) also added straight-set singles victories.
With Saturday's home match with Centenary now canceled due to weather, the Comets will return to action Sunday with a 12 p.m. non-conference home match against Austin College. UTD will then wrap up the ASC West slate and the regular season on Thursday, April 18, with a 3 p.m. home match against Howard Payne.
The 2019 ASC Championship is slated for May 2-4 at the UTD Tennis Courts.
