Baseball Upended by Sul Ross State on Senior Day

RICHARDSON, TX (04.20.19) - Playing its final regular season home game, the UT Dallas baseball team was handed an 11-6 loss by Sul Ross State Saturday afternoon to wrap up a three-game American Southwest Conference series with the Lobos.

Prior to the contest, 11 members of the Comet squad were recognized as part of Senior Day festivities with parents and family members on hand.

The Comets (now 18-18, 10-8 ASC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Burciaga, but SRSU quickly snagged a 6-1 lead after scoring three runs each in the 2nd and 4th frames. UTD got two runs back in the bottom of the 4th on a bases-loaded walk by Ryan Sloma followed by an Austin Adams RBI groundout, but the Lobos regained an 8-3 after two more runs in the top of the 6th inning.

UTD clawed back within three runs in the 7th thanks to a bases-loaded infield single Ryan Burciaga and a balk by Lobo reliever Ian Craigie, but SRSU answered with a run in the 8th and two more in the 9th to extend its lead back to six runs. Thomas Craig completed the scoring with a solo home with one out in the bottom of the 9th, his third of the series and team-leading 11th of the season.

Craig finished the game 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Burciaga was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Matt Mikusek was 2-for-5 with two runs scored from the lead-off spot.

Currently sitting in sixth place in the ASC standings, the Comets will close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game road series at LeTourneau. The two teams will open the set with a 7 p.m. single game Friday night before wrapped up the regular season with a 2 p.m. doubleheader Saturday in Longview.
