Comets Open Final Weekend Series With 10-3 Win Over LETU

LONGVIEW, TX (04.26.19) - The UT Dallas baseball team kicked off its final American Southwest Conference series of the regular season Friday night with an 10-3 road win over LeTourneau.

The bottom three batters in the Comets' line up accounted for six of the squad's 10 hits as UTD moved back over .500 on the season, now at 19-18, with two games left in the regular season. The Comets are now 11-8 in ASC play, currently sitting sixth in the league standings.

Down 2-0 after the first two innings of the night, the Comets plated four runs on just two hits in the top of the 3rd and never looked back. UTD scored two runs on Yellow Jacket errors and added sacrifice flies by Jacob Perry and Ryan Burciaga to secure a 4-2 lead. The Comets then used back-to-back RBI hits with two outs in the 4th by Austin Blanford and Matt Mikusek to extend their advantage to four runs, 6-2.

Host LETU (20-18, 9-10 ASC) got a run back in the bottom of the 5th before both teams were held scoreless in both the 6th and 7th innings. The Comets then picked two runs each in the 8th and 9th, scoring two more runs off of Yellow Jacket miscues. LETU finished the night with six errors.

Mikusek and Sloma each finished the win 2-for-4 while Blanford and Aaron Fanning were both 2-for-5. Comet starter Ryan Vera (4-2) picked up the win after giving up just two earned runs on five hits in 6.0 innings of work. Vera struck out two and walked two. Carter Cochrane closed out the win for the Comets, tossing 3.0 scoreless inning with three strikeouts for his second save of the spring.

The Comets and Yellow Jackets will close out the regular season Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Conrad-Vernon Field.
