ABILENE, TX (04.07.19) - The UT Dallas men's tennis team improved to 9-1 on the season after a 7-2 road win over McMurry Sunday in American Southwest Conference West Division play.
Sunday's win pushed the Comets' divisional record to 3-1 with two conference matches left to play. UTD will take a short break from ASC West play Wednesday with a 3 p.m. match with Dallas Baptist. The Comets will then host Sul Ross State Friday at 1 p.m. in ASC West play and would lock down a spot in the ASC Tournament with a victory.
The Comets climbed out to a 2-0 lead with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, but host McMurry countered with a win at the top spot to trim UTD's lead to 2-1 heading to singles play. The Comets locked up their fourth straight victory, however, with five singles wins.
The tandem of
Ashwin Vaithianathan and
Haydn Steffes opened the match with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles while the duo of
Eric Chen and
Brandon Giordonelli followed quickly with an 8-5 victory at No. 3.
Up 2-1 after doubles,
Giovanni Zamboni opened singles play with a straight-set win at No. 2 over McMurry's Chase Daniell, 6-0, 6-4. Vaithianathan then lifted the Comets to a 4-1 cushion with a 6-0, 6-2, win over Connor Hogan at No. 3.
The War Hawks answered again with a win at No. 1 singles as Carlow Martinez outlasted
Mario Jelev, 6-2, 6-4, but the Comets powered back with wins at the three remaining singles spots to seal the team victory. Steffes clicnhed the match with a 6-1, 6-2, win at No. 4 while before Chen (No. 5, 6-1, 6-2) and
Jed De Luna (No. 6, 6-3, 2-6, 10-6) added late victories.
