UTD Women Fall to No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in NCAA 2nd Round

CLAREMONT, CA (05.11.19) - One day after collecting the program's first-ever national tournament victory, the UT Dallas women's tennis squad had its 2019 team season come to an end with a 5-0 loss to No. 2-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the second round of the NCAA Division III National Championship.

The Comets wrapped up the spring wih a 12-2 overall record after making the deepest postseason run in program history. During the 2019 spring, the Comet women dominated the American Southwest Conference West Division with a 6-0 league mark and claimed the program's second-ever conference crown, hoisting the ASC trophy on the Comets' home courts last weekend.

UTD earned a hard-fought 5-4 victory on Friday in an opening-round upset of No. 29-ranked Linfield, but the reigning national champion Athenas proved why they are one of the favorites for the 2019 NCAA D-III national title as well as they dispatched the Comets in less than two hours.

Regional host C-M-S (24-1) rolled through doubles play unscathed and then added a pair of quick singles victories to complete the sweep of the Comets.

The Athenas opened the match with an 8-1 win by Sarah Bahsoun/Nicole Tan over UTD's Sumvruta Iyengar and Frida Muedsam at No. 2 doubles. C-M-S then added an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles and an 8-3 win at No. 3 to completed the sweep.

UTD's top doubles squad of Kathy Joseph and Sindhu Ravula was handed its first loss of the spring in its match against the top-ranked tandem in the NCAA D-III's West Region in C-M-S's Catherine Allen. The Comet duo will continue their season, however, as the two UTD players will compete in the NCAA D-III Doubles Championship later this month in Kalamazoo, Mich. In addition, Joseph is an alternate in the singles draw.

C-M-S would wrap up the dual with straight-set wins at No. 4 and 5 singles. Sydney Lee downed Comet Sophie Farmer, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4, while Bahsoun upended UTD's Muedsam, 6-1, 6-0, at No.5. The Athenas were at set up on the remaining four singles contests as the match concluded.
