Comets Roll Over McMurry, 5-0, in ASC Semifinals

RICHARDSON, TX (05.03.19) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team is headed back to the finals of the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament for the second straight season after picking up a quick 5-0 win over McMurry Friday afternoon in the event's semifinal round, hosted by the Comets at the UTD Tennis Courts.

The Comets (10-1) will play for their second-ever conference title Saturday when they square off with East Texas Baptist at 11 a.m. in a battle of the ASC's two divisional champions. UTD earned an 8-1 regular-season win over the Tigers in February.

UTD took just under an hour to complete its doubles sweep of to grab an early 3-0 lead on the War Hawks, the No. 3 seed out of the ASC's West Division. Sumvruta Iyengar and Frida Muedsam opened the scoring with an efficient 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles over McM's Zayra Gomez/Claire Huffine. Stephanie Joseph and Svaksha Iyengar then added an 8-3 win over Gabrielle Ellwanger/Neah Garza at No. 3 to push the Comets' lead to 2-0. Top-flighted Kathy Joseph and Sindhu Ravula capped the doubles sweep with an 8-3 win of their own over Samantha Ritz/Kaitlyn Robert.

The Comets then need just another hour to wrap up the 5-0 team victory. Muedsam collected a 6-0, 6-0, win over Ellwanger at No. 3 and Kathy Joseph closed the victory with a 6-0, 6-1, win over Ritz at No.1

At the conclusion of the contest, Sumvruta Iyengar (No. 2, 6-3, 0-0), Sophie Farmer (No. 4, 6-3, 0-1), Ravula (No. 5, 7-5, 0-0) and Svaksha Iyengar (No. 6, 6-0, 0-1) were all a set up.

The Comets earned the ASC's West Division for the second consecutive season this spring, posting a perfect 5-0 record against divisional foes. UTD drew ASC East No. 4 seed Louisiana College in Thursday's opening round, but the Wildcats could not field a team for the postseason.

UTD is making is making its fourth-ever appearance in the ASC title match on Saturday, looking for the program's first title since 2013.
