ASC CHAMPIONS! Comets Defend Home Court For 2nd ASC Title

RICHARDSON, TX (05.04.19) - The UT Dallas women's tennis team claimed its second-ever American Southwest Conference title Saturday afternoon after a 5-2 win over East Texas Baptist in the league title match, held at the UTD Tennis Courts.

Hosting the ASC Tournament for the first time in program history, the Comets (now 11-1) collected their first league crown since 2013 and will now head to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The national event starts with regional play on May 10-12 with the the field, including sites, to be announced on Monday at www.ncaa.com.

UTD had earned an 8-1 win over the Tigers in the regular season, but Saturday's ASC title tilt proved to be a much closer affair. The Comets snagged a 2-1 lead after doubles play as ETBU avoided the sweep with a strong win at No. 3. The Comets then opened singles action with a quick 6-0, 6-1, win by Frida Muedsam at No. 3 and Sindhu Ravalu followed soon after with a 6-2, 6 -0, win at No. 5 to lift UTD to a 4-1 advantage.

The Tigers (14-6) rallied with a straight-set win at No. 4, however, as Kaleigh Smith edged Sophie Farmer, 6-2, 6-4, to trim the Comet lead to 4-2. ETBU also had a lead at No. 1 singles before the dual ended with a second-set tie breaker by Sumvruta Iyengar at No. 2. Iyengar rolled over Tess Willis, 6-1, in the opening set but needed an extra point to secure the straight victory to clinch the match. Iyengar finished strong, however, downing Willis, 7-1, in the tie break to deliver the Comets' their fifth point.

The Comets opened doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 1 by Ravula and Kathy Joseph and doubled its lead after an 8-5 win at No. 2 by Iyengar and Muedsam. ETBU grabbed an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles.

At the conclusion of the mach, Stephanie Joseph was leading her match at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 5-0, and Kathy Joseph was down a set and playing a tie breaker in her second set against Elisa Kendall at No. 1.

A freshman out of Plano, Muedsam was named MVP of the ASC Tournament after going 2-0 in both singles and doubles over the weekend. Muedsam was joined on the All-Tournament Team by teammates Sumvruta Iyengar, Kathy Joseph and Ravula.
