RICHARDSON, TX (08.30.19) - Sophomore
Sofia Munoz broke open a scoreless game in the 55th minute as she lifted the UT Dallas women's soccer team to a 1-0 home win over Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the Comets' 2019 season opener.
Munoz took advantage of a Titan miscue early in the second half to help push UTD to its third straight season-opening victory. After a Comet corner kick, the UWO defense failed to clear the ball from the box cleanly which allowed Munoz to strike the ball from six yards out past a diving Titan keeper for the only score of the contest. Munoz led the Comets with eight goals scored as a freshman last fall.
The Comets (1-0) finished the night with 17 shots in the victory, taking only five on frame. UTD held possession of the ball for 64 percent of the contest, spending nearly 80 percent of that time in the Titan defensive half. UWO (0-1) took just six shots, three on goal.
Munoz led UTD with four shots, three on goal, while
Stephanie White,
Bailee Davis and
Keely Fillman each finished with three shots. Comet keeper
Morgan Sherman played the full 90 minutes in goal for UTD, making three saves in her first collegiate start.
The Comets return to action Sunday night whey they host DePauw to wrap up the opening weekend of the season. Game time is 7 p.m. at the UTD Soccer Field.
