UTD Women Outlast DePauw Thanks To Late Penalty Kick

RICHARDSON, TX (09.01.19) - After a scoreless opening half, the UT Dallas women's soccer team had to both rally from behind and then hold on for the victory as the Comets out-dueled DePauw Sunday night, 3-2, in non-conference action.

The Comets (2-0) fell behind early in the second half and would rally for a 2-1 lead with less than 25 minutes left to play, only to watch DePauw (0-2) knot the game in the 78th minute. Just 27 seconds after the Tigers' equalizer, UTD regained the lead on a game-winning penalty kick by Sofia Munoz, which lifted the Comets to their second straight victory to open the 2019 campaign.

The Tigers opened the scoring less than four minutes into the second period when Shaili Kumar streak down the left side of the field on a breakaway and found teammate Anissa Nourse on the right side of the net for the first goal of the contest. The Comets countered in the 62nd minute on a goal by Stephanie White, who tallied on a long pass from the right side from Munoz. In the 67th minute, UTD snagged a 2-1 lead when Kaitlyn Manning found the back of the net after a rebounded shot by teammate Stephanie Ward.

Kumar slipped a shot past the UTD keeper in the 78th minute to knot the contest, 2-2, setting up Munoz' second game-winning goal in as many contests for the Comets. The penalty kick was set up by a Tiger hand ball in the box after a Munoz cross from the right.

The Comets ended the match with 17 shots, eight on frame, compared to just 10 by DePauw, only three of which on target. Munoz led UTD with five shots of her own, two on goal.

UTD returns to action next weekend with a pair of non-conference road games. The Comets will travel to Birmingham, Ala., for a classic hosted by Birmingham-Southern. UTD will meet host BSC at 5 p.m. Friday before squaring off with Huntingdon at 5 p.m. Saturday.
