RICHARDSON, TX (09.21.19) - The UT Dallas volleyball team reeled off its third straight American Southwest Conference sweep Saturday afternoon, disposing of LeTourneau, 25-17, 25-17, 25-16, in front of a raucous Gold Game home crowd in the UTD Activity Center.
The Comets (8-3, 3-0 ASC) and Yellowjackets (6-6, 1-2 ASC) helped raise awareness for childhood cancer by handing out black-and-gold, "Fight Like A Kid" t-shirts before the game, and honoring UTD's 9-year old mascot Kaitlyn Johnson during pre-game introductions.Â
Freshman outside hitter
Catherine Croft led the way with 12 kills seven digs, a service ace and assisted block. Senior
Jillian Via added in 10 kills, three aces and 14 digs as the Comets kept their ASC East Division record perfect going into next weekend's first ASC Crossover Tournament at LeTourneau in Longview. The Comets will meet ASC West opponents Sul Ross State and Hardin-Simmons on Friday, then McMurry on Saturday.
Lauren Schilling and
Allison Owen added eight kills a piece while
Madison Ball picked up 15 digs. Setters
Caroline Shecterle had 21 assists while
Sydney Fitt added 19.
Things started out slow for UTD in the first set as the two teams traded points, leading to an 11-11 tie midway through. The Jackets were still within reach at 17-15, but the Comets ended the set on an 8-2 run to finish off the 25-17 win. Porter and Schilling combined for nine kills in the first set.
UTD dominated the second set, racing out to a 12-2 lead and never really being challenged again in a 25-17 win. Via and Croft had seven of the Comets' 18 kills in the set as UTD hit .250.
In the third and deciding set, the Comets hit a match-best .350, pulling away with 18 kills on the way to a 25-16 win. LETU was still within reach early, trailing just 12-10, but UTD finished the set off on a 13-6 run for the win.
