Comets Hold On For 68-63 Home Win Over Belhaven

RICHARDSON, TX (01.18.20) - The UT Dallas men's basketball team overcame one of their coldest shooting performances of the season Saturday afternoon to earn a 68-63 home win over Belhaven in American Southwest Conference East Division play.

The Comets improved to 12-4 overall with Saturday's narrow victory, holding on to second place in the ASC East with a 6-1 league mark. UTD will next open a three-game road trip Thursday night when they travel to Alpine for an ASC crossover clash at West Division leader Sul Ross State. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.

Hans Burwitz recorded his ASC-leading eighth 'double-double' performance of the season as he closed out the afternoon with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jalen Weber led the Comets with 22 points while Kelden Pruitt added 10 points to round out the UTD players in double figures. The Comets shot 42.4 percent from the field but hit just 4-of-22 three-pointers in the contest.

The Comets held a slim two-point lead, 41-39, at the break and would widen their cushion to as many as nine points early in the second half as Burwitz used a lay up to lift UTD to a 41-32 lead with just under 15 minutes to play. However, the visiting Blazers rallied back with 12-2 run over the next five minutes to snag a one-point advantage when Joshua Roberts drained a pair of free throws to give BU a 44-43 lead at the midway point of the period.

UTD answered with a Hunter Stevens bucket on its next possession to re-take the lead and would hold on to that lead for the remainder of the contest. The Blazers clawed back within two points, 51-49, at the six-minute mark but would get any closer for the remainder of the match. The Comets hit 6-of-8 free throws in the last three minutes to seal the victory.
