AUSTIN, TX (01.02.20) - Senior point guard
Jalen Weber banked in the game-winning three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to play as the UT Dallas men's basketball team rallied for an 82-81 road win Thursday night at Concordia Texas as the squad returned to American Southwest Conference play.
After two free throws by CTX's Cameron Jones with 14 ticks left, Weber slowly walked the ball down the court to set up the game-winning play. Weber never gave up the ball and stepped back behind the three-point arc from the left elbow to secure the Comets' fourth consecutive victory. The host Tornados had one last chance to steal away the win, but Luis Gonzalez' half-court shot fell short.
The Comets (now 8-3, 2-0 ASC) got off to a strong start and would even secure a 12-point lead late in the opening half as
Xavier Ferrell capped an 11-0 UTD run with a three-pointer with just 7:23 left before the break to give the Comets a 32-20 advantage. However, CTX responded late in the half and would cut the Comet lead back to just four points, 44-40, at halftime.
The Tornados used back-to-back three-pointers by Philip Meikle and Gonzalo Munoz to snag a three-point lead, 54-51, with 16:13 left to play, setting up a dramatic ending to an early-season league game.
The two teams would remain close for the remainder of the contest, trading leads four times before Comet
Michael Forster would drain a three-pointer from the corner with 1:23 remaining to give UTD back a slim one-point advantage, 79-78. Gonzalez hit one of two free shots with 46 seconds left to tie the game at 79 before Jones' free throws, which gave the Tornados an 81-79 lead before Weber's game-winner.
Hans Burwitz would lead a balanced scoring attack for the Comets as he finished with 20 points to lead five UTD players in double digits. Burwitz added 11 rebounds for his second straight and fourth overall 'double-double' performance of the season. Forster added 17 points, Weber had 16 points,
Kelden Pruitt 11 points and Ferrell 10 points. Ferrell and Forster each dished out five assists.
The Comets closed the game shooting a season-high 60 percent from the field, going 30-for-50 from the floor. UTD hit 11-of-28 three-pointers (39.3%) and was 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the free-throw line. The Comets out-rebounded CTX, 33-20.
UTD will return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when the Comets visit Mary Hardin-Baylor in another ASC road game.
