MARSHALL, TX (01.09.20) - Despite a double-digit second-half lead, the UT Dallas men's basketball team suffered an 83-74 road loss at East Texas Baptist Thursday night in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 9-4, 3-1 ASC) had its four-game winning streak come to an end Thursday night, but will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon when they square off with another ASC East contender, LeTourneau. Tip-off is 3 p.m. in Longview.
After securing a 34-27 lead on the Tigers at the half, UTD would extend its lead to as many as 10 points in the second half when
Hans Burwitz gave the Comets a 38-28 advantage with 18:58 left to play. The Comets maintained their lead until the midway point of the period before ETBU's Colton Collins hit a three-pointer to give the host Tigers a 57-54 lead with 9:19 on the clock. Colins' trey was part of a 15-0 run by ETBU as the Tigers extended their lead to 67-54 with just under seven minutes left.Â
UTD would trim the deficit back to single digits, 67-58, after a
Jalen Weber jumper with 5:10 remaining. Weber would account for 12 of the Comets' 20 points down the stretch. UTD would not get closer than six points for the remainder of the contest.
Weber led all scorers with 27 points, hitting 11-of-19 shots from the field, while adding four assists and three rebounds. Burwitz added 16 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for his fourth straight 'double-double' while
Kelden Pruitt finished with 15 points.
The Comets shot better than 50 percent from the floor for the fourth consecutive outing, hitting 31-of-57 shots (54.4%) as a team. However, UTD was just 9-for-24 (37.5%) from three-point range and made just six trips to the free throw line, hitting 3-of-6 attempts.
