BIRMINGHAM, AL (12.11.20) - The UT Dallas women's basketball team completed its perfect run through the Dardenne Memorial Classic Friday afternoon with a 77-55 win over Covenant College.
The Comets went 3-0 at the event this week, held at the Bill Battle Coliseum, on the campus of of Birmingham-Southern College. UTD edged Piedmont, 70-66, Wednesday, and rolled over Belhaven, 83-41, Thursday.
UTD scored 26 points in the final period against the Scots to lock down their fourth consecutive victory to open the 2020-21 season.
Kaitlyn Judge and
Sydney Brock both finished with a game-high 13 points while
Maddie Edler scored 11 points and
Raenett Hughes had 10 points.
Kelley Skinner led the Comets with nine rebounds while Hughes added six rebounds and a game-high nine assists.
The Comets shot a blistering 69.2 percent (9-of-13) over the final 10 minutes of ball game to turn a 10-point advantage after three quarters, 51-41, to a 22-point victory.
After trading leads early in the game, Skinner gave the Comets the lead, 7-4, for good at the 7:21 mark of the opening stanza with a three-pointer. Skinner's trey ignited a 8-0 run by UTD before the squad cooled off slightly for a 14-10 after one quarter.
The Comets snagged their first double-digit advantage with 4:18 left in the second on a Brock layup, 25-14, but led by just seven points, 32-25, at intermission as they had a difficulty time putting away Covenant early. UTD would then outscore the Scots, 19-16, in the third to secure a 10-lead heading to the final quarter.
UTD scored five straight points early in the fourth, four by Brock, to start the late separation from the Scots. The Comets iced the victory with a 9-0 run with less than two minutes to play.
The Comets (4-0) are scheduled to return to action Saturday, Jan. 2, with a non-conference road game at Howard Payne.
