JACKSON, MS (02.13.20) - Senior guard
Victoria Pena became the program's all-time leading scorer as she lifted the No. 20-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team to a record-breaking 111-66 road win over Belhaven Thursday night in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
Thanks to a game-high 24 points in the lopsided victory over the Blazers, Pena climbed into the Comets' top spot on the scoring list, now with 1,386 points in her four years with the program. Pena also holds the UTD career records for rebounds (569) and three-point field goals (197), both set earlier this season.Â
Thursday's victory pushed the Comets (now 18-4, 12-1 ASC) one step closer to a fourth consecutive ASC East Division title. UTD holds a two-game lead over second-place East Texas Baptist (16-6, 10-3 ASC) with three games left in the regular season, thanks to a Tigers' home loss Thursday night. The Comets, riding a nine-game winning streak, could lock up a share of another division crown Saturday afternoon with a win at Louisiana College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Pineville, La.
The Comets not only watched Pena continue to etch her name into the record book in Thursday's win, but posted the most points in a game in the program's 22-year history with their 111-point output. The previous school record of 109 points was set in the first year of the program's existence, a 109-25 home win over Southwestern Assemblies of God on Feb. 6, 1999. UTD finished tonight's victory 45-of-95 from the field as a team, matching the all-time mark for field goals made in the game. The Comets also set a new high mark for field goals attempted.
Pena closed her historic night 9-for-19 from the floor, draining five three-points, and added 11 rebounds for her fourth 'double-double' of the season. Pena was one of five Comets to top double-digit points in the 45-point victory.
Natalie Miller added 15 points,
Kelley Skinner and Nkenchinyerem Okehi each had 14 points and
Raenett Hughes finished with 13 points. Okehi led the Comets with a career-high 16 rebounds, nine of which on the offensive end.
The Comets out-rebounded Belhaven, 23-3, in the opening quarter to set the tone early. The host Blazers (13-9, 6-7 ASC) scored the first basket of the game, but UTD responded quickly and never trailed again. Pena started off the game hot, hitting her first three shots, as the Comets rolled to a 28-18 lead after the first 10-minute period. UTD would score at least 25 points in each quarter, extending their lead to 53-37 at the break and 81-53 after three frames. The Comets would then outscored BU, 30-13, in the final period.
UTD shot 47.4 percent as a team from the field and drained 13-of-30 three-pointers (43.3%). The Comets were 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the line and dominated the boards, out-rebounding BU, 66-25.
