RICHARDSON, TX (02.06.20) - The No. 21-ranked UT Dallas women's basketball team rolled off its seventh consecutive victory Thursday night as the Comets held off LeTourneau, 67-63, in American Southwest Conference East Division play.
The Comets (now 16-4, 10-1 ASC) will now head into a home clash with ASC East co-leader East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon with sole possession of division lead on the line. Tip-off is 1 p.m. at the UTD Activity Center.
Raenett Hughes match a career high with 35 points as the junior guard accounted for more than half of the Comets' offensive output. Hughes finished the night 14-of-23 from the field and 7-of-10 from the foul line for her fourth 30-point performance of the season while adding six rebounds and a pair of steals.
UTD overcame its worst three-point shooting performance of the night but was able to earn the win with a 52-35 rebounding advantage over the YellowJackets. The Comets were 0-for-14 as a team from beyond the arc. UTD ended the game shooting just 36.2 percent (25-of-69), the squad's second-lowest percentage in a win this season, and hit just 17-of-27 free throws.
Victoria Pena added 12 points to round of the Comets in double figures and added five rebounds and a pair of assists while
Katie Gunther came off the bench for a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman
Jordan Maxwell led the team with four assists.
The Comets used both a late run and and their best shooting performance of the night in the opening period, as UTD hit 10-of-20 shots in the first 10 minutes to snag a 20-12 lead after one frame. However, the Comets cooled off in the second quarter, hitting just 3-of-17 shots (17.6%) from the field, but held on to a 36-32 lead at intermission. Neither team shot well in the third as UTD maintained its lead throughout the period and headed to the fourth with a six-point cushion, 51-45.
The YellowJackets (10-10, 6-5 ASC) clawed back in the fourth thanks to better than 50 percent shooting in the period as LETU was 8-for-15 in the frame, but the Comets would hold off the charge, not allowing the visitors to get closer than three points.
